The Monument

I went to see The Monument over the weekend at the Factory Theatre.  It was a preview show before it’s regular run starts later this week.

The play was written in the early-1990s and is about a soldier who is facing death for the war crimes he committed. He escapes death by agreeing to serve an unknown woman. The Factory Theatre re-formed the play to deal with the issues surrounding reconciliation with the indigenous Canadian peoples and the missing indigenous women.

I thought the play was well acted and dealt with a lot of heavy issues and concepts. The use of stage and set design was nice too. It always impresses me when a small cast (in this case 2 people) are able to perform and memorize so many lines. I found it was a really slow start but it picked up momentum in the last half hour or so.
