Summary: The novel focuses on the successes of Henry Skrimshander, the baseball star at Westish College, who seems to be well on his way to playing for major baseball team.  A throw goes awry and Henry finds himself fighting against self-doubt which threatens to ruin his future. Meanwhile, several of Henry’s baseball team members find themselves confronting their secrets and deepest hopes. Owen Dunne begins a dangerous love affair with Westish College president Guert Affenlight. Mike Schwartz finds that he has let go of dreams at the expense of guiding Henry’s career. Guert Affenlight’s daughter, Pella, escapes her disastrous marriage to start a new life. Although baseball is at the centre of this novel, it is deals with ambition and its limits, family, friendship and love.My Thoughts: I unexpectedly really enjoyed this novel given that I’m not a fan of baseball. There was a lot of other elements that kept my interest in the storyline.  I like the interactions of the main characters and their team members among themselves outside of their games and practices along with the interactions with their respective love interests. It’s worth the read.
