Summary: Arrah, a young woman and heir to two lines of powerful witchdoctors, longs for her own magic but continually fails the tests of magic. Her mother disapproves and Arrah feels she is never good enough. When the children begin to disappear from the kingdom, Arrah looks to a dangerous ritual to get the magic she desires for the payment of a few years of her life. With the magic Arrah obtains, she sees the betrayal and what is about to threaten the kingdom and all the people she loves. Will the threat cost more than Arrah can afford?

My Thoughts: It was a slow start of this first book due to establishing the characters and the history of the magical elements of the Arrah’s family and the kingdom. Once it picked up, it was a wonderful adventure to read. There were a few too many characters and it was hard to keep them straight. I would have liked more development of some of the minor characters that Arrah spent time with. Otherwise, overall this book was a good read and I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series once they are release.
