Summary: Homegoing is a historical fiction novel following the decedents of an African woman, Maame, and her two daughters that were separated by circumstances. One daughter, Effia, marries a British governor in charge of Cape Coast Castle. The other, Esi who is Effia’s half-sister, is held captive in the dungeons below. Subsequent chapters in the novel alternate between Effia’s and Esi’s descendants – Effia’s descendants are settled in the Gold Coast of Ghana while Esi’s descendants have living in America. My thoughts: I enjoyed this novel and loved that it alternated between the two branches of the family. I liked that each generation’s character could be read as a stand-alone short story. There was not a need to read the novel in one go – I could take breaks in between each chapter to focus on other things to read. It was quite different stories between each branch of the family and the following generations – culturally and expectations growing in that environment.
