Kids going back to school is one of two things that mark the end of Summer and start of the Fall season. The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is the second.

I managed to take in two movies. I’m not one to purchase a block of tickets and plan my time around when movies are happening or when stars in town. Two deals came up one as a group buy and the other was through Cineplex. I took advantage of the Cineplex discount to purchase a single ticket for Tokyo Fiancee, a Belgian movie.

The movie was mostly in French and scattered throughout was some Japanese and English. I did enjoy the movie and was surprised that the main actress and the director were both in attendance as well as provided a 15 minute Question & Answer period with the audience.

Tokyo Fiancee was about a Belgian women, Amelie, who is infatuated with a Japan and moves to Tokyo to emerse herself in the lifestyle and culture. During her time in Tokyo, she begins tutoring Rinri, a Japanese student who is a Francophile. Through explorations of the city and their tutoring sessions, Rinri and Amelie begin falling in love with each other. Now having seen the movie, I definitely want to read the autobiographical novel that served as its basis.
