I was at the Japan Foundation a few weeks ago taking an art lesson. A mango artist was in town from Japan giving lessons on how to draw manga.

Along with the drawing lessons, a mini Japanese lesson was giving. We were taught a few Japanese greetings which we were immediately able to use to greet the artist teaching the lesson.

Most of the group were young people in high school while only a handful of us were in our 30s or older.

Although I, along with a couple other people sitting at my table, we’re complete beginners, I think we did pretty well. There were others sitting at other tables who did really well. The point of the art lesson was to do a self portrait in the manga style.

After the lesson, I have more appreciation for the art and those who are able to draw with better artistic details.
