Rent

I recently went to see Lower Ossington Theatre‘s production of Rent. It’s a musical I hadn’t seen before and wasn’t too familiar with so I thought I’d check it out.

Rent is based on Giacomo Pucicni’s opera, La Boheme and tells the story of a group of poor young artists and musicians.  The group struggle to survive in New York under the shadow of AIDS while creating and developing their art form.

Generally, for me, it was an okay musical. I didn’t have any expectations and since I hadn’t seen it performed by any other theatre group, I really didn’t have any comparisons to go by.  It was enjoyable but not one I’d be seeing again.  I might check out the movie to at least have one other performance to compare to.

Having read the story online after watching Rent and that La Boheme was the inspiration, I will watch La Boheme when it’s next in Toronto.
