Stroll through the Distillery District

One of my favourite neighbourhoods is the Distillery District in the eastern part of downtown Toronto. As mentioned on their website, is was once The Gooderham and Worts Distillery which played an important role in the growth and wealth of Toronto and of Canada. The offices of The Gooderham and Worts Distillery in the Flat Iron Building had a clear view of this district.

During the summer the Distillery has many festivals and events going on and can be quite busy. Also, the Young Centre for the Performing Arts is located in the area which makes it great to check the neighbourhood prior to a show year round. It’s a wonderful neighbourhood to check out the art galleries, artsy stores, and restaurants.

I’ve usually wondered through the area during the warmer months but after seeing a matinee a couple weeks ago, I took the opportunity to roam around. I popped into a couple of the design and clothing retail stores – I didn’t note the name of the stores I browsed through but it’s just one of those areas to pop in and out different stores. I picked up a coffee at Balzacs Coffee before buying some baked goods at one of the nearby bakeries. Soma Chocolatiers has one of their two locations at the Distillery. Their chocolate making machines are enclosed behind glass which I thought was interesting to check out. They so also have a small cafe and sell a number of chocolate products.
