Summary: The Remains of the Day is a portrayal of life that has long passed with servants, lords, and manors. Set in England or 1956, Stevens, a dedicated butler of Darlington Hall, takes a holiday through the English countryside to reacquaint with his friend and former Darlington Hall housekeeper, Miss Kenton.
Memories resurface of Stevens’ professional life and his unnoticed love interest in Miss Kenton. He examines his loyalty to Darlington House and where things could have changed.
My Thoughts: I thought this book was well written. The storyline wasn’t what I expected it to be. It was a bit bland focusing on what the butler did professionally and the etiquette surrounding servants during the early parts of the 19th Century along with their lack to express opinions for world events.
