The Hot Docs Festival is in full swing and I have several documentaries this week to watch. I saw The Cleaners earlier this week. Like Netizens, this is another Big Ideas documentary.
The Cleaners shares the hidden aspects of the digital industry. The focus is on outsourced content moderators based in Manila that work for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google who “clean” the internet of offensive posts and videos.
This was a fantastic documentary and very eye opening by bringing the content moderators to the forefront and allowing the audience to be aware of the behind the scenes of curating the internet. Some aspects of it was difficult to watch given the subject matter and imagery that was spaced throughout the documentary. It only added to the storyline of where social media is heading.
