Summary: Jim is separated from his parents at the start of World War II in China. He struggles to survive the various internment camps and the never ending search and hope in finding his parents. During his imprisonment at a concentration camp, Jim witnesses many of the unsightly aspects of war including the white flash of light from the bomb that dropped on Nagasaki.

My Thoughts: I remember watching the movie many times growing up so the novel was on my reading list for a while. I enjoyed the read and would need to revisit the movie again. It’s a different perspective on World War II that what I’ve typically read in other novels and it was a nice change to the love stories entwined through the survival of war.
