Over the weekend, I checked out one Hot Docs documentary. It was the final weekend of the festival and I finally got around to seeing Art and Craft.
Art and Craft follows American art forger, Mark Landis, whose work of spans thirty years and includes different painting styles from Picasso, religious icons, and other art pieces. Although Landis isn’t looking for financial gain, he poses asa philanthropist, executor of a family will, and Jesuit priest to give away many pieces of work to a number of institutions in the United States. Matthew Leininger, a registrar who was duped by Mark Landis, discovers the true nature of Landis’ work and tries to expose his escapades to the art world.
This is was a very enjoyable documentary. The theatre was packed and I managed to get a decent seat. There were moments that had the audience laughing out loud and there were other moments that had me amazed as Landis’ work ethic. Even after leaving the theatre to walk around the neighbourhood, it was great to overhear conversations about the documentary.
