Summary: For Today I am a Boy recounts the story of Peter Huang, a Chinese-Canadian man. He has three sisters and he is the prized only boy in his family who his father believes will fulfill the dreams of Western masculinity. Peter feels differently and he knows that he is a girl.
Peter and his sisters are confined to small-town Ontario grew up with many secrets. Each sibling move out on their own and spread from Montreal to California to Berlin. Throughout Peter’s own journey, he is blocked by playground bullies, masochistic lovers, Christian ex-gays and the overpowering shadow of his father.
My thoughts: This book was a very interesting and fascinating story. It felt like I was reading a memoir of the character. I thought it was well written with several memories interspersed throughout the book as the character grows and the relationships with family develop. It was very interesting reading his self-discoveries through his life and internal debate of how he feels regarding his body. This book wouldn’t have been anything I would normally picked up to read but it was definitely worth the read.
