I went to see one documentary that was playing during the Hot Docs festival. Hot Docs typically happens during the first week of May showcasing several documents from various parts of the world.
I bought a ticket to see Who is Dayani Cristal? It follows a team from the Pima County Morgue in Arizona who investigates, identifies, and tries to contact families of migrant workers who illegal cross the US-Mexican border. The focus of this documentary is on an anonymous man found dead in the Sonora Dessert and all that is known about him is the name tattooed across his chest, Dayani Cristal.
The forensic investigation leads Mexican actor and activist Gael Garcia Bernal retracing the steps of this migrant worker from Central America. The documentary provided some insight into workers who cross the border, difficulties they face back in their home village, and motivations for making the journey.
