I recently went to see a couple Japanese movies. A few times a year, the Japan Foundation in Toronto along with the Japanese Consulate put together these events showcasing Japanese movies and documentaries. This past weekend three movies were showing at the Bloor Cinema at Bathurst and Bloor. The three movies were: Happy Flight, Someday, and Villon’s Wife. I managed to see Someday and Villon’s Wife. The Japan Foundation does have a library which includes the above movies among Japanese books, manga, and other movies to borrow.
Someday

Summary: Set in a rural mountain village, the community still holds onto the tradition of Kabuki performances. The villagers participate in acting in their amateur Kabuki and trying to make it a success each year. Intertwined in the rehearsing and performance of the Kabuki, the return of a villager unfolds many tears and laughter with an old friend whose wife ran away with this villager.
My thoughts: I enjoyed the movie very much as it showcased a beautiful rural area of Japan. The story was great – both the Kabuki and the re-connection of the husband and his wife. It was a touching movie and was nice to see the traditional aspects of the culture mixed in with the modern.
