Summary: Things Fall Apart is a novel set in an African village, Umuofia, and follows the life of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion. Umuofia is a fictional group of nine villages in Nigeria where the Igbo people dwell. The focus of the book is on Okonko, his family and personal history. The customs and society of the Ibo people unfold in the novel and the changes it undergoes as the British colonialism and Christian missionaries influence the community.
My thoughts: The book was a fantastic, quick read. It provided great insight into the culture and society of an African tribe. I loved the simplicity the Ibo people took to their way of life and not question the customs handed down through the generations. As we see the changes in the tribe’s culture and society as the Christians and colonial administrators establish themselves in the village, it was great to read the misunderstandings and conflicts between the white people and the natives. As the missionaries try to instill their beliefs among the natives, it lead to an unexpected, tragic ending. This book was thoroughly enjoyable, and I recommend it unreservedly.
